input, output

What do we do when we run out of ideas?

The hack runs around in circle, seized by the fear inspiration will never strike again.

The pro realizes there are seasons to the work, periods of expansion and contraction. You spend time creating and therefore must recharge. You’ve generated a copious amount of output and therefore must pause to receive input. Just as the human body requires food to function, the creative mind must have inspiration.

But inspiration doesn’t strike like lightning. It must be cultivated and stored.

Stuck?

Watch your favorite movie, then a movie you’ve never seen before. Read poetry. Watch music videos on YouTube. Bake chocolate chip cookies. Kiss your partner. Go rollerskating. Look at photographs. Read a good book. Read a terrible book. Play your favorite records on repeat. Kiss your partner some more.

Then get back to work.
