For years, I’ve said life is like a swimming pool.
Some people are content to splash around in the shallow end, living simple lives and having simple conversations. Others plumb the depths of the deep end, diving into conversation and pushing themselves to expand their thinking.
A friend of mine recently made an interesting point: there are many points of access to the deep end of the pool, provided you’re specific enough. Specificity becomes the means to dive deeper.
For example, stamps. If you had a conversation with a stamp collector, you’d probably want to open a vein, right? What about a stamp collector who only collects Russian stamps? Better yet, Russian stamps that predate the Revolution. Suddenly, you’re in deep waters.
If you’re specific enough, everything touches the bottom of the pool.
