Austin Kleon states “the first step towards becoming a writer is becoming a reader, but the next step is becoming a reader with a pencil.“
My dad recently told me he’s been taking this a step further: once he finishes a book, he’ll mark the date he read it on the inside cover. He can go back to almost any book on his bookshelf and tell you not only how many times he’d read it, but also exactly when.
Just as you can’t step in the same river twice, you never read the same book twice. Making notes in the margins becomes yet another way to transport yourself, to capture the moment leave pieces of yourself behind as you read.
