While plowing back through some of the old voice memos, I found a quote from a dear friend of mine, writer and musician Michael Winn. We were talking about writing and developing characters and he explained why he’d had such trouble capturing human life on the page:
“Living your life makes you a good writer. I didn’t understand how people worked. In real life, I didn’t observe real people and write about real people and that’s why I didn’t understand how characters really worked. Living life and understanding how to connect to people has informed so much of how I would do that. You have to prioritize living if you’re going to make art about life.”
Mike’s artistry is unparalleled and his music is absolutely worth a listen.
